Crix fete ‘Polytechnique’

Villeneuve pic wins TFCA's best Canadian film award

Quebec helmer Denis Villeneuve’s “Polytechnique,” inspired by the true story of a mass murder at a Montreal university in 1989, won the Toronto Film Critics Assn. best Canadian film award on Tuesday night.

The award, which comes with C$10,000 ($9,625), was given to Villeneuve by director David Cronenberg at the critics’ gala awards dinner.

The other pics nominated for the award were Montreal helmer Benoit Pilon’s “The Necessities of Life” and Toronto helmer Bruce McDonald’s “Pontypool.”

Polytechnique is a film of astonishing courage,” said TFCA prexy Brian D. Johnson, film critic for Maclean’s magazine. “Without a whiff of exploitation or crude moralizing, Denis Villeneuve brings a sensitive, unflinching eye to the Montreal Massacre.”

Quebec helmer Xavier Dolan won the inaugural Jay Scott Prize for emerging artist for “I Killed My Mother,” which he also wrote and starred in. The prize was presented by Atom Egoyan and comes with a check for $4,812.
