Night makes right

A-listers gather at Night Before bash

HOLLYWOOD — Despite or perhaps because of the tough economic times, stars turned out in droves for the 7th annual Night Before Party, held at the Beverly Hills Hotel Saturday. More than $5.5 million was raised for the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

When the fire marshal declared the event over-capacity at 9:20 p.m., guests including Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Kate Beckinsale, Bill Maher, James Caan, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio were diverted into the downstairs crystal ballroom, where coffee and couches were brought in for the spillover party, which soon became its own star-studded soiree later joined by Sharon Stone, Patricia Clarkson and Chris Rock.

Once everyone finally got into the more than 900-person bash by the hotel’s pool area, stars young and old were able to let loose in the relaxed environment.

Steven Spielberg and Daniel Craig smoked cigars in a booth while Zooey Deschanel scoped out the toppings at the ice-cream bar as funnymen Sacha Baron Cohen, Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen told jokes by the bar. Even the stars were star-struck, as Diane Keaton appeared as excited to meet “Slumdog Millionaire’s” Dev Patel as he was to meet her. And when Eric McCormack walked by as a photo was being taken of Elton John and David Furnish, he stopped and said, “I am going to want a copy of that.”

The intergenerational soiree boasts a guest list ranging from 18-year-old Patel partying alongside industry vet Kirk Kerkorian, age 91.

Jeffrey Katzenberg played gracious host all evening, chatting with Tom Cruise, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr. and the MPTF’s Ken Scherer.

“Tonight is yet one more time the community is turning out in support of this fund and its work,” Katzenberg said. “To have this kind of support is extraordinary.”
