Actor Stephen Gideon dies at 52

Original 'Naked Boy Singing' fought cancer

Actor and cabaret performer Steve Gideon died of cancer May 1 in West Hollywood, Calif. He was 52.

Born Stephen Craig Hayes, he grew up in Virginia and North Carolina. He graduated Harvard and the Boston Conservatory of Music before embarking on a career in musical theater. Gideon was one of the original cast members of “Naked Boys Singing.” In 1999, Gideon secured permission to stage (and star in) the first same-sex production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Marry Me a Little.”

His other credits include “Nite Club Confidential,” for which he appeared in productions in New York, Boston, Long Beach and L.A. and the musical revue “All Night Strut.”

He is survived by his longtime companion Bernard Vyzga, his father, a sister Pam and a brother.
