NBC is developing a semi-scripted comedy from sitcom vet Larry Charles and McG’s Wonderland shingle.
Untitled project centers on a group of sci-fi fanboys in a small town who shoot their own version of a canceled TV show. Charles is onboard to write, exec produce and direct the project.
Warner Bros. TV, where Wonderland Sound and Vision is based, is the studio on the sitcom. NBC and Warner Bros. said the project will be shot for series consideration in what normally would be called a presentation order.
But in this case, the studio and network prefer to describe the commitment as a “prototype” for what a show would eventually look like.
Charles has been prolific in the semi-scripted space recently, having directed Sasha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” and “Bruno” features; he’s also the regular helmer on Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
McG and Wonderland prexy Peter Johnson will exec produce.
Project reps the second comedy Wonderland has set up at the networks this development season. Shingle is also behind the Danny Comden-penned “The Intruders,” which received a script-plus-penalty order at Fox.
Charles’ past credits at the Peacock include “Seinfeld” and “Mad About You.”
