CanWest buys shows at L.A. Screenings

'Glee,' 'Cleveland Show' among purchases

CanWest Global, which barely escaped going into bankruptcy this week, has begun purchasing shows at the L.A. Screenings.

Canadian media conglom went shopping at Twentieth Century Fox Friday afternoon, buying musical dramedy “Glee,” animated laffer “The Cleveland Show” and “Sons of Tucson” for its Global network.

Rival Rogers, with “30 Rock” and “Parks and Recreation” already on its slate, acquired another comedy, the Ed O’Neill starrer “Modern Family” from Twentieth. Rogers will now have three Twentieth sitcoms on its air as it picked up “How I Met Your Mother” and “Better Off Ted” from Global.

“Cleveland” is from “Family Guy” exec producer Seth MacFarlane and “Sons of Tucson,” which will begin in midseason on Fox, co-stars Tyler Labine. Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd exec produce “Modern Family.”

“Glee” from “Nip/Tuck” creator Ryan Murphy, aired on Fox at 9 p.m. Tuesday following the penultimate episode of “American Idol” as a way to whet the appetite of viewers before the show actually hits the primetime schedule in the fall.

Global’s current top shows include “House,” “Heroes” and “NCIS” and “Survivor.”
