Apostle preps for post-‘Rescue’ life

Leary, Serpico shingle plans for the future

Apostle Films’ Denis Leary and Jim Serpico are busy prepping their post-“Rescue Me” plans.

The shingle is shooting back-to-back the final two seasons of the FX drama, which is set to end its run in 2011. At the same time, Apostle has lined up a slate of new comedy and drama development at several broadcast and cable nets.

“We’re aggressive developers,” said Serpico, who serves as president of Apostle. “We’re always looking at new character-driven projects, and at life after ‘Rescue Me.’ Hopefully, it will include some of these shows.”

Projects in the works include a comedic drama at CBS, first developed at the net last year.

Hourlong stars Michael Rapaport as a social worker who’s good at helping others with their problems, but not necessarily his own. Also onboard the character-driven procedural is Peter Ocko (“Pushing Daisies”).

“It takes advantage of Mike as an actor,” Serpico said. “He gets to straddle both sides, as a dramatic actor and by flexing his comedy chops.”

At Fox, scribes John Beck and Ron Hart (“According to Jim”) are behind the half-hour “Extended Family,” about a household that takes in foster kids.

Multicam comedy is based on Beck’s experiences growing up in a family that also made room for foster kids. Coincidentally, Apostle partner Tom Sellitti grew up in a similar situation.

On the cable side, Apostle is prepping a one-hour drama for FX set in the world of televangelists.

David Folwell (“Medium”) is writing the project, which explores both the legitimate TV preachers and the ones who are in it only for the money.

Shingle is also developing a smallscreen take on “The Rebel League,” loosely based on the book of the same name, for Spike.

Stephen Engel (“The Big Bang Theory”) is writing the project, about the startup of a contemporary hockey league — and its out-of-control managers and players.

At USA, projects include “Partners in Crime” from Janine Sherman-Barrois, about ex-husband and wife private eyes. Cabler also has the project “Scales of Justice,” from New York playwright Joe Sutton. New Orleans-set drama centers on an overweight ex-cop who enlists his overeaters support group to fight crime.

Apostle is set up at Sony Pictures TV, where it’s in the middle of an exclusive overall deal. Sony is attached to all of the above projects except for the televangelist drama, which will come out of FX Prods. Projects were all developed with the help of Apostle VP of TV development Adrienne O’Riain.

Next up, the company has secured the rights to the feature film “Gattica,” which they plan to develop as a one-hour police procedural set in the future. The “Gattica” smallscreen adaptation will be written by Gil Grant and is being developed through Sony TV’s international division.

Serpico said the shingle will also be on the lookout for starring vehicles for Leary.

“We’ll worry about that after ‘Rescue Me’ wraps,” he said.
