A mention of yoga music usually evokes new-agey Indian-influenced sounds. But in planning the Wanderlust Festival — which pairs yoga and music — co-founders Jeff Krasno and wife Schuyler Grant were thinking outside the meditative box by combining such performers as hip-hop activist Michael Franti and pop rockers Spoon and DJ Girl Talk with big-name yogis like vinyasa flow guru Shiva Rea and Anusara Yoga brainchild John Friend.
The July 24-26 event will be held at Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Krasno, CEO of Velour Music Group, and Grant, who owns and runs yoga studio Kula Yoga Project, conceived the fest after hosting many out-of-town yoga retreats. Grant, who starred in a 1985 telepic version of “Anne of Green Gables,” said that “there’s nothing sacrosanct” in the way she leads her retreats.
Throughout the years, the diversity of the attendees has amazed both Krasno and Grant. “They were normal people who liked to have fun… they weren’t just ladies in stretch pants,” Grant said.
In 2007 Krasno started wondering if he could produce the same kind of holistic event on a massive level — one with music as a draw. At Wanderlust, you can “do yoga, listen to great music, eat healthy — and you go away profoundly changed,” Grant said.
