Epic season at Center Theater

Kicks off June 23 with 'Lupone'

Four populist, Tony Award-winning musicals and the Pulitzer Prize-winning “August: Osage County” anchor the 2009-’10 Center Theater Group season at the Ahmanson.

The 43rd season will be highlighted by “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” “Dreamgirls,” “Mary Poppins” and “South Pacific” along with Tracy Letts’ “Osage,” which won the Tony for top play in 2008.

“This is a powerhouse season, filled with theater’s highest awards and its most talented artists,” CTG artistic director Michael Ritchie said. ‘The productions are epic in scale.”

The season will kick off on June 23 with “An Evening with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin,” presented as a one-week engagement.

Next comes “Spamalot,” which runs for nine weeks beginning July 7; staging will be the first time the comedy has been produced in L.A.

“Osage,” opening Sept. 8, will star Estelle Parsons, who joined the B’way show in June.

“Mary Poppins,” beginning Nov. 13, will star Ashley Brown and Gavin Lee, both of whom originated the role on B’way.

“Dreamgirls” will kick off on April 4, 2010, after its Nov. 2009 opening at the Apollo Theater in Gotham.

Finally, “South Pacific” will open on June 30, 2010.
