Kevin Spacey to ‘Inherit’ stage role

Actor will star in Trevor Nunn play at Old Vic

Kevin Spacey will topline a Trevor Nunn-helmed production of “Inherit the Wind” in September at London’s Old Vic, where Spacey is a.d.

Spacey will play Henry Drummond, the lawyer defending a man standing trial for teaching evolution in the classroom, in Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s fictionalized 1955 take on the Scopes Monkey Trial. The thesp previously worked with Nunn in a 2005 Old Vic staging of “Richard II.”

No further casting has been announced. Christopher Plummer played Drummond in the 2007 Broadway revival, with Brian Dennehy as the prosecutor.

Also on the Old Vic’s 2009-10 slate is a revival of “Six Degrees of Separation,” to be directed by David Grindley, as well as the two upcoming outings from the Bridge Project, “Three Sisters” and “As You Like It.”

John Guare’s 1990 play “Six Degrees,” about wealthy Gothamites taken in by an impostor, was first seen in London at the Royal Court Theater in 1992 before it went on to the West End. Brit helmer Grindley, whose production of the play will bow in January, has become a regular presence on Broadway, this season directing “The American Plan” and “The Philanthropist.”

Bridge Project, currently in previews at the Old Vic with its repertory productions of “The Cherry Orchard” and “The Winter’s Tale,” is a three-year collaboration between the Old Vic, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and helmer Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Prods. Next pair of offerings, Mendes-helmed stagings of “Sisters” and “Like It,” will preem in January at BAM before a tour that will include a June 2010 stop at the Old Vic.

London troupe is repped on Broadway with its revival of “The Norman Conquests.”
