‘Ugly Truth’ premieres in Los Angeles

Tracy, Hepburn presence felt at comedy's bow

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn were a presence — in an ethereal way — at Thursday’s ArcLight preem for “The Ugly Truth.”

Writer Karen McCullah Lutz described the pic’s tone as “Tracy-Hepburn with a foul mouth,” while producer Tom Rosenberg said, “It’s what Tracy and Hepburn were thinking but couldn’t say.”

It certainly would have broken ground in the ’40s for Tracy-Hepburn to have made what writer Kirsten Smith described as “a classic romantic comedy with a bad-ass, R-rated edge.”

“This is the romantic comedy answer to the R-rated guy movies,” said Columbia prexy Doug Belgrad. “But it’s not just for women — our guy ends up in bed with Katherine Heigl.”
