HOLLYWOOD — Tuesday’s Saks Fifth Avenue “Unforgettable Evening” fund-raiser at the BevWilshire centered on a serious subject — cancer research; brought out some serious heavy hitters — Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gwyneth Paltrow; and ended with a seriously show-stopping performance by Beyonce.
“No matter what else is going on in the world, in these complicated times it is an honor to be here,” Spielberg told the crowd. “Gwynie is my surrogate daughter. She is my most brilliant discovery, which I can take credit for,” he said before introducing his wife, Kate Capshaw, and Rita Wilson, who then presented Paltrow with the night’s Courage Award.
The glitzy affair raised $2.5 million, thanks in part to a $1.5 million gift from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, for the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund.
Beyonce’s three-song set at the end of the night got everyone on their feet, including guests Ron Meyer, Jon Feltheimer, Richard Lovett, Sheryl Crow and Lisa Kudrow.
