Sony shuffles 2010 comedies

'Grown Ups,' 'Green Hornet' to drop next summer

Switching up its 2010 comedy lineup, Sony has decided to move Adam Sandler buddy comedy “Grown Ups” out of March and into the heart of summer.

“Grown Ups” will open June 25, the date originally staked out for the studio’s Seth Rogen action-comedy “The Green Hornet,” which now bows July 9.

The Sandler comedy — also starring Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider — had been set for March 12.

Pic’s storyline, however, is ready-made for release near the July 4th holiday. (Sony’s decision follows the blockbuster success of this summer’s buddy laffer “The Hangover,” from Warner Bros.)

“Grown Ups” revolves around five friends who reunite after decades apart. Comedy reteams Sandler and director Dennis Dugan; Sandler penned the script.

“Green Hornet” follows a newspaperman who turns into a masked crime-fighter at night. Stephen Chow also stars. Rogen penned the script with Evan Goldberg.

The June-July stretch next year is already jam-packed, although “Grown Ups” has the luxury of being the only film currently set to open June 25.

Formidable competition should come with the opening five days later on June 30 of Summit’s “Twilight: The Eclipse.” Paramount’s “The Last Airbender,” from M. Night Shyamalan, follows on July 2.

Opening the same weekend as “Green Hornet” is Universal’s toon “Despicable Me” and Fox’s “Predators,” directed by Robert Rodriguez.
