Mikhalkov sets up ethics commission

Six weeks after he triumphed over adversaries following a bitter struggle within the Russian Filmmakers Union, Oscar-winning director Nikita Mikhalkov has set up an ethics commission with sanctions for slander that would include exclusion from the influential organization.

Mikhalkov, who was reelected head of the union in April after his protege candidate had been ousted last December by disgruntled members, said May 19 that an ethics commission was needed to prevent union members from insulting one another.

“Today we have accepted the concept of the creation of an ethics commission that will judge the moral behavior of members,” Mikhalkov told Russian wire agency Interfax.

The code is intended as an internal mechanism to nip in the bud problems between members and prevent public mudslinging and court action of the sort witnessed after last December’s union fallout, which resulted in two longtime members of the union being expelled.
