Roadside mops up ‘Happy Tears’

Lichtenstein film to be released in U.S. in 2010

CANNES — Roadside Attractions has picked up U.S. rights to Mitchell Lichtenstein’s “Happy Tears” at the Cannes Market.

Family comedy, which bowed in Berlin, stars Parker Posey, Demi Moore, Ellen Barkin and Rip Torn.

Pic was produced by Joyce Pierpoline and Lichtenstein.

Roadside plans to release the film first quarter of next year. Lionsgate will handle home video and other domestic ancillary rights. Inferno reps foreign sales.

Through their deal with Lionsgate, Roadside also released Lichtenstein’s first pic, Sundance 2007 entry “Teeth.”

Further sales emerged late Wednesday as the Cannes Market entered its final stanza.

  • Japan’s Cetera and Russia’s Intercinema have taken Jose Luis Lopez Linares’ “Bejart,” which market preemed at Cannes. Linares’ “The Chicken, the Fish and the King Crab” was licensed to Japan’s Media Factory. Both pics are repped by Latido Films.

  • Latido also has sold Salvador Garcia Ruiz’s young love triangle drama “Paper Castles” to Japan’s Only Hearts, Taiwan’s Swallow Wings, Korea’s Activers Ent., Suraya for Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines, and Seven in Greece.

  • Coproduction Office has sold “A Town Called Panic” to Optimum for the U.K., Australia’s Madman and Jin Jin Pics for Korea.

  • Films Distribution has mopped up most final sales in South-East Asia on Audrey Tautou starrer “Coco Before Chanel,” in the wake of a private screening at Cannes. Festive Films has taken Singapore, IPA took Thailand, Taiwan went to CMC, Turkey to Chantier Films and the Middle East to Jaguar. Most major territories were sold in Berlin or picked up by Warner Bros. Sony Pictures Classics has taken U.S. domestic.

  • Bac Films has inked a series of sales for animated film “Les Lascars,” which screened in Cannes’ Critics’ Week. Pic, which features French thesp Vincent Cassel’s voice, sold to multiple territories including Brazil’s Europafilmes and Benelux’s Les Films de L’Elysee.
