Indie distributor heads to ‘Rio’

Maya Ent. picks up Silbeira film for U.S. release

Los Angeles-based indie distrib Maya Entertainment has picked up Breno Silveira’s “Once Upon a Time in Rio” for U.S. theatrical release.

The Rio de Janeiro-set love story about a rich girl and a hot dog vendor from the slums unspooled at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.

Pic’s scribe, Patricia Andrade, co-wrote Silveira’s 2005 Brazilian Oscar submission “Two Sons of Francisco.”

Producers are Conspiracao Filmes partners Silveira and Pedro Buarque de Hollanda.

Maya recently released Sundance pic “Sleep Dealer” and has set “Rio” for a July domestic bow.

Sony released the film in Brazil last summer.
