‘Funny People’ debuts in Hollywood

Apatow, Sandler present new feature

HOLLYWOOD — After “Funny People” (which one guest called “the ‘Citizen Kane’ of depressed middle-aged comedian movies”) unspooled July 20 at the ArcLight, director Judd Apatow said he saw the pic as “a serious but funny film about something serious.”

Apatow said the experience of screening a film so personally close to his world “made me feel like I stood naked in the room for two hours.”

U topper Marc Shmuger called the pic Apatow’s “most mature, accomplished film,” while co-topper David Linde described it as “the rare personal film that actually touches a very wide audience.”

As one of the comic brethren, Garry Shandling had this to say: “When the movie was over, I turned to another comedian and said humorously, ‘I don’t get the whole part about comedians and sadness; their inability to make relationships work; and the search for love.’ It was all over my head.”
