Film fest to screen centerpiece on ice

Screen weighing nine tons will be highlight at Stockholm event

For cinema fans just longing to capture the chilly essence a wintertime filmgoing in Sweden, the Stockholm Film Festival has just the ticket: a pic screening on a giant block of ice.

A 16½ x13-foot screen weighing 9 tons was sawed out of a river close to the world-famous ice hotel in Jukkasjarvi in Lapland last winter. The ice there is reported to be very clear, which should make the image projected very smooth.

Together with four pillars that will surround the screen to make it all look even more impressive, the set-up weighs in at a combined 11 tons.

The screen has been kept on ice over the past year and will be transported to Stockholm to be erected at a suitable square or park.

The name of the film to be screened has not yet been decided, but would-be attendees on Nov. 21 and 22 should hope it’s one radiating warmth: The Stockholm weather at the end of November can be very unpredictable, and it might very well snow.

Warm clothing, natch, is recommended.
