‘Slumdog,’ ‘Billy’ honored at Astaires

Fernandes, 'Elliot' trio pick up prizes

“Slumdog Millionaire” choreographer Longines Fernandes, “Billy Elliot” choreographer Peter Darling and three boys who alternate in the title role of Billy were among the winners of the 2009 Astaire Awards Monday night.

Fernandes picked up a dance-centric Astaire for movie choreography, while young “Billy” thesps David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish drew a shared nod for male dancer.

The trio are also up for a lead actor Tony, while Darling, the Astaire winner for Broadway choreography, is a Tony contender for choreographer.

Pia Glenn, who played Condoleeza Rice in “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush,” scored for female performer.

Stanley Donen (“Singin’ in the Rain”) won the Douglas Watt Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alan Cumming hosted the event, with Savion Glover, Bebe Neuwirth and Geoffrey Rush among the presenters.
