Chinn has an impressive set of credits producing TV docs and docudramas. He got the idea for “Man on Wire” when he heard Philippe Petit on radio talking about his coup in walking an illegal tightrope between Manhattan’s Twin Towers back in 1974. Based at the production company Wall to Wall, Chinn signed up New York-based Brit James Marsh to direct. Persuading Petit to cooperate was more difficult. The film blends footage shot at the time by Petit with reconstructions and interviews to create a magical, vertiginous and emotional narrative about “the artistic crime of the century.” It’s very much Marsh’s movie, but the BAFTA nom recognizes Chinn’s work as the producer who made it happen.
