News Emmys announces noms

'60 Minutes' scores 15 nominations

“NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” took two nominations for top breaking story in a regularly scheduled newscast as the News & Documentary Emmy noms were announced Tuesday morning.

PBS earned 41 nominations overall, the most of any network. Second with 23 was CBS. The Eye’s venerated newsmagazine “60 Minutes” scored 15 noms, the most of any program.

Segments nominated for “NBC Nightly News” in the breaking news category were the death of “Meet the Press” host and network veteran Tim Russert and the collapse of the federal bailout talks. Both segments were exec produced by Alexandra Wallace.

Competing with the Peacock is the coverage of the Myanmar cyclone, on “ABC World News With Charles Gibson,” and “Chaos in DR Congo,” on “BBC World News America.”

In live coverage of a breaking story in longform, CNN was nominated for its telecasts from the Democratic National Convention and on Election Night, with NBC also getting tabbed for its coverage on the historic evening Barack Obama was elected president.

For investigative journalism in a newscast, the Atlanta cabler scored for “Anderson Cooper 360” and its segment “Online Drugs” as well as “Hurricane Giveaway” on “The Situation Room”; “CBS Evening News With Katie Couric” received a nom for its “V.A. Suicides: Cover-Up Exposed” segment; and “Brian Ross Investigates: America’s Corporate Royalty” was seen on a troika of ABC programs: “Good Morning America,” “World News Tonight” and “Nightline.”

For top interview, “60 Minutes” was nominated for its segment called “Saddam’s Confessions”; also nommed were Charles Gibson’s interview with vice president nominee Sarah Palin on “ABC World News Tonight”; “Bill Moyers Journal’s” talk with California Rep. Henry Waxman; “Fareed Zakaria GPS’ ” interview with China premier Wen Jiabao; and PBS’ “POV” segment titled “Inheritance.”

HBO’s Oscar nominee “Taxi to the Dark Side” and “China’s Stolen Children” were nominated for best docu, along with Cinemax’s “Nanking,” “Inheritance” from PBS and two from National Geographic Channel: “Gorilla Murders” and “The Devil Came on Horseback.”

Barbara Walters will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, while CNN Prods. is set to receive the President’s Award for its commitment to longform documentaries.

Kudos are presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The ceremony is held Sept. 21 from the Frederick P. Rose Hall in Lincoln Center.
