ROME — Lionsgate’s “Mad Men,” Gallic family comedy “Desperate Parents” and Blighty docudrama “The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall” were the big winners at the 49th Monte Carlo TV Festival, which wrapped Thursday.
Both “Mad Men,” which airs on AMC, and “Parents,” produced by Gaul’s Elephant Story for pubcaster web France 2, nabbed producer and thesping Nymphs in their categories, respectively best drama and comedy series.
“Mad Men’s” Monte Carlo win adds yet more kudos to the show’s growing tally following its top nod at Blighty’s BAFTAs in April.
“Desperate Parents,” about two families coping with parenthood in contrasting ways, is produced by Gaul’s Elephant Story.
Channel 4’s “The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall,” about a British student killed by an Israeli military sniper on the Gaza Strip, took the telepic nod and a director Nymph for helmer Rowan Joffe.
Tying for miniseries were Teutonic web ZDF’s “The Wolves,” about a German youth gang, and Belgium’s “Flesh and Bones,” produced by Woestijnvis.
While European skeins fared nicely in artistic kudos, U.S. shows, as usual, scooped all the Intl. Audience Awards, based on series’ overall international audience ratings. Those went to “House” for drama, “Desperate Housewives” for comedy and unstoppable evergreen “The Bold and the Beautiful” for soap.
Hollywood stars Matthew Fox, Hill Harper, Kyle MacLachlan, Sam Waterston and Jennifer Love Hewitt plus “Law and Order” producer Dick Wolf were among the high-wattage contingent strutting down the red carpet at the five-day fest.
