‘Karamazovs’ roars at Lions

Film wins trio of prizes at Czech awards

Czech film bizzers honored Petr Zelenka on Saturday for his adaptation of a hit Prague stage play, “The Karamazovs,” which took the prize for best pic and the critics prize while Zelenka took home the director kudo.

Three other Czech Lions went to Bohdan Slama’s drama “A Country Teacher,” an exploration of small-town homophobia. His original screenplay won, as did actress Zuzana Bydzovska.

Karel Roden drew the actor nod for the thriller “Guard No. 47,” which also won for editing.

“Citizen Havel,” an account of the behind-the-scenes struggles of former president Vaclav Havel, won the docu trophy, while veteran horror helmer Juraj Herz, who has begun shooting again after decades in semi-retirement, was honored for lifetime contribution to Czech film.

Some 26 pics competed for the Lions, giving the Czech Film Academy more choices that it has had in over a decade.
