John Patrick Shanley ‘Doubt’

Oscar: Adapted screenplay

Why he’ll win: Not only did the stage version of “Doubt” earn him a Tony, but Shanley also took home the much more prestigious Pulitzer Prize for this effort. An Oscar – which would make it his second after his win in 1987 for “Moonstruck” — should be in the bag after that.

Maybe not: Then again, perhaps the play was the thing — i.e., there are those who believe it had more resonance onstage than onscreen.

Critical quote: “The suspense crackles, and the arguments cut deeper. John Patrick Shanley, directing for the first time since 1990’s unfairly maligned “Joe Versus the Volcano,” opens up his play, making it less academic and more human,” says Peter Travers of Rolling Stone.
