“Go Anpanman,” Nippon TV’s popular kid toon, which centers on a talking bean-paste bun, has set a Guinness book record for having the most characters over its run: a total of 1,768 since the show’s launch in 1998.

It’s also been a marketing bonanza, selling $1.15 billion of character goods annually and 50 million comic paperbacks since its launch. There have been 20 “Anpanman” feature toons.

Still, Takashi Yanase, the 90-year-old creator of the franchise, says he hopes “Anpanman” will be praised more for “its quality than its quantity.”
