Pixar talks ‘Toy Story’

Third installment set for 2010, first two go 3D

At Comic-Con, Pixar presented its new slate as going back to basics with a 3D twist. At the Friday panel, Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter offered a sneak peek of the new and improved “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” both of which will make their debuts in a 3D format.

“‘Toy Story’ came out in 1995. Think of how many kids were born since then. They only know us from the home videos. These films were meant to be seen on the big screen,” he said.

In addition to the classic Pixar pics’ makeovers, Lassater also discussed “Toy Story 3.” Directed by Lee Unkrich, Buzz and Woody must come to grips with a grown-up Andy.

“It’s a different emotional core from the other movies,” said Lassater.

“We needed to have more than just have the toys go on another adventure,” added Unkrich. In additional to the original voice leads of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, Michael Keaton joins the cast as the ubergroovy Ken, Barbie’s boytoy.

“Toy Story 3” is due out on June 18, 2010.
