Last night’s “Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word” at the White House — featuring Joshua Brandon Bennett, Michael Chabon, Mayda del Valle, James Earl Jones, Eric Lewis, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jamaica Heolimeleikanani Osorio, Esperanza Spalding and Ayelet Waldman — was taped for an upcoming HBO special, according to a White House pool report, the latest venture between the Obama team and the pay cabler. (HBO also presented the Lincoln Memorial inaugural special). President Obama told those gathered that the purpose of the evening was to “highlight the importance of the arts…the power of words and music.” The event also was streamed on the White House Web site.
