Aussie state boosts film funding

New South Wales wants to lure in industry

SYDNEY — Production of “Happy Feet 2” and “The Guardians of Ga’Hoole” is under way but politicians in Australia’s biggest state, New South Wales, want an ever bigger screen industry.

State premier and arts minister Nathan Rees has pledged to grow production with an A$5 million ($4 million) boost in investment funding.

Coin will be distributed to local film and TV makers by the NSW Film and Television Office, which has changed its name to Screen NSW.

Announcement followed criticism of the flailing Labor government by industryites after the once leading screen production territory lost ground to the competing states of Victoria and Queensland.
