Variety critics set Karlovy slate

Lineup includes three debut movies

Three debut movies and five sophomore outings are among the 10-pic lineup of this year’s Variety Critics’ Choice at the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival (July 3-11).

First-timers are Sweden’s Fredrik Edfeldt, with his haunting, poetic portrait of childhood, “The Girl”; Catalan helmer Patxi Amezcua, with his taut thriller, “25 Carat”; and Dutch director Noud Heerkens, with his one-woman showpiece, “Last Conversation,” starring Johanna ter Steege.

Event marks the 12th collaboration between Variety and European Film Promotion, which now groups national orgs from 29 countries. Program is selected by Variety crix and coordinated by senior international critic, Derek Elley.

From Hungary comes local box office hit “Made in Hungary,” a ’60s rock ‘n’ roll musical helmed by Gergely Fonyo. Repping the U.K. is visceral horrorfest “The Children,” by Tom Shankland (“WAZ”). And from Greek-Cypriot director Hristos Georgiou the offbeat, island-set murder mystery, “Small Crime.”

Two films hop the Atlantic. Croatian Goran Rusinovic’s “Buick Riviera” takes old Bosnian rivalries to the wintry roads of North Dakota, while Serbian Darko Lungulov, in the wry “Here and There,” contrasts the experiences of a New Yorker in Belgrade with those of a Belgrader in the Big Apple.

Completing the lineup are two inventive psychodramas. Flemish genre helmer Pieter van Hees follows a nebbish stunt choreographer who turns macho man after a bump on his head. And Czech director Maria Prochazkova magically goes inside the head of a moppet who’s obsessed with the tale of Little Red Riding Hood.
