Portuguese helmer Manoel de Oliveira, who will be 101 in December, has set his next pic — “The Strange Case of Angelica.”
He is casting the local-language pic, budgeted at north of E2.5 million ($3.5 million), which will begin shooting in Portugal in December.
Set in the 1950s, “Angelica” begins with a photographer staying at a hotel who is awakened by the owners, wanting him to take a photo of their daughter, who has just died.
“Angelica” is based on a screenplay de Oliveira wrote in 1952. It will be produced by Luis Minarro at Spain’s Eddie Saeta plus Maria Joao Mayer and Francois d’Artemare at Portugal’s Filmes do Tejo, and France’s Les Films de l’Apres-Midi — the same team behind de Oliveira’s last film, “Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl.”
