Apparition to release ‘Young Victoria’

Emily Blunt pic slated to close Toronto

Bob Berney and Bill Pohlad’s new distrib Apparition will release GK Films’ “The Young Victoria.”

The historical romance, opening Nov. 13 Stateside, charts the rise to power of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and her courtship with soulmate and husband, Prince Albert.

Pic closes the Toronto Film Festival next month.

Emily Blunt stars as Victoria and Rupert Friend as Albert. Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Thomas Kretschmann and Mark Strong round out the main cast.

Deal has taken some time to come to fruition. “Young Victoria” was unveiled at a screening during Berlin’s European Film Market in February. Pic has already opened in the U.K., where it grossed £4.9 million ($8.1 million), as well as several other overseas territories.

Berney screened the film only a month ago. “I think it’s very audience friendly and commercial,” he said.

Berney added that Apparition will mount a “fairly aggressive” platform release on 25 or 30 screens, ramping up pretty quickly to a couple hundred.

Film was helmed by Canadian Jean-Marc Vallee and penned by Julian Fellowes. Producers are Graham King, Martin Scorsese, Tim Headington and Sarah Ferguson. GK Films’ Denis O’Sullivan co-produced, and Colin Vaines exec produced.

As per its deal with Apparition, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group will handle domestic ancillary distribution on “Young Victoria.”

In “Shazam!,” Zachary Levi brings off something so winning it’s irresistible. He plays a square-jawed, rippling-muscled man of might, with a cheesy Day-Glo lighting bolt affixed to his chest, who projects an insanely wholesome and old-fashioned idea of what a superhero can be. But he’s also playing a breathless teenage kid on the inside, and [...]
