Funimation gets Original

Texas-based distrib to make its own toons

Texas-based Funimation, a leading distrib of Japanese toons to the U.S., has launched Original Entertainment to produce toons.

Unit is headed by Chris Moujaes, former prexy and CEO at Austin-based toon house Boomstar.

Although Funimation has yet to announce titles, Moujaes is likely to use his strong connections to the Indian biz to make toons with Indian animators. The object is to generate new sources of revenue now that sales from Japanese toons are declining in the U.S.

Launched in 1994, Funimation is a subsid of the Navarre Corp. engaged primarily in distribbing Japanese toons on DVD and other media in the US and world markets. Among the properties that made its marketing name was the “Dragonball” toon franchise and its successors.

The company has also recently acquired broadcasting and other rights to the “Full Metal Panic!,” “Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu,” “Sekirei” and “Testuwan Birdy: Decode” toon series.

Funimation operates the Funimation Channel, a 24-hour toon cable web, as well as mobiles services on AT&T and Sprint and a channel on YouTube.
