Terrestrial TV revs down in Canada

Pay TV accounts for two-thirds of growth

TORONTO — A report released Tuesday by StatsCan, Canada’s national statistics agency, reveals that terrestrial TV revenues declined for the first time in a decade in 2007, while pay TV revenues rose.

The survey shows terrestrial TV accounted for just over half of last year’s C$6.18 billion ($6 billion) total TV revenue compared to almost 80% a decade ago.

Hardest hit were pubcasters while the commercial terrestrial sector saw its smallest growth in a decade, up just 1.8% to $3.2 billion thanks to a weak advertising market.

In the pay TV segment, pay-per-view and video-on-demand accounted for two-thirds of the growth ($194 million) in the pay TV segment.
