BUENOS AIRES — Argentinean shingle Ideas del Sur is developing “Atraccion x 4,” a telenovela aimed at children and teens that it hopes will repeat the runaway success of “Patito feo” (Ugly Duckling).

Mexico’s Televisa is co-producing and handling international sales as part of a 2008-2012 supply deal. The telenovela will air on Artear-Canal 13 in Argentina this year.

“Atraccion” is a romantic comedy about two families, one with three rich boys that form a reggaeton-pop band and another with three poor girls who create a pop-rock group.

The girls’ father could have made it huge as a musician but his hottest song was stolen 20 years earlier by the boys’ father, a secret that begins to unravel when the families are brought together.

As with “Patito,” Ideas will spin off businesses like albums, live shows, magazines and merchandising to improve profits.

“Patito,” now in its second season on Artear, has sold in tape and format version throughout Latin America and to countries including Belgium and France, with nearly 100 live shows given by the show’s spin-off bands since 2007. The program is airing to strong numbers on Disney Channel in Italy and Cartoon Network in Spain.

Ideas next plans to produce eco-minded fiction series “David y Goliat” (David and Goliath), also targeted at children.
