NBC U eyes pay TV web in Japan

Service to offer Hollywood films, TV dramas

TOKYO — NBC Universal is mulling launching a digital satellite pay TV channel in Japan.

NBC U intends to apply for a broadcast license from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to start the service following Japan’s switch from analog to digital broadcasting in July 2011, according to a report in the Nikkei newspaper.

The new strand will offer Hollywood pics and dramas.

NBC U already has a significant presence in Japan through its subsids Universal Pictures Japan, Geneon Entertainment, NBC Universal Television Japan and NBC Universal Global Network Japan, which operates the Sci Fi satellite channel.

A spokesman for the company in Japan said that NBC U “considers broadcast satellite a good business chance…and we are studying ways in which we can use that medium. But at the present time we have not made any application (for a license).”
