CBS dominates on Thursday

New episodes of ‘Survivor,’ ‘Trace’ triumph

On a night when several shows returned for the first time since the writers strike ended, CBS handily defeated its competition Thursday.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “CSI” earned the most eyeballs for the evening and won the 9 p.m. hour with a 5.8 rating/19 share in adults 18-49 and 20.3 million viewers overall. Its competition was lean, however, as both ABC’s “Lost” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) and two episodes of NBC’s “The Office” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) were repeats. A double dose of Fox’s gameshow “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” gave “CSI” its biggest challenge with a 3.0/8 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall.

In a competitive 8 o’clock hour, “Survivor” (3.9/11, 12.8 million viewers overall) defeated two half-hour new episodes of “My Name Is Earl” (3.1/9, 7.4 million viewers overall) and the first of two hourlong episodes of “Fifth Grader” (2.8/8, 9.7 million viewers overall). Two episodes of ABC sitcom “Miss Guided” (1.5/4, 4.5 million viewers) came in fourth.

A fresh hour of “Without a Trace” (4.1/11, 15.4 million viewers overall) was too much for both ABC’s “Eli Stone” (1.6/4, 5.2 million viewers overall) and two repeats of “The Office” (2.3/6, 4.3 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: CBS, 4.6/13; Fox, 2.9/8; NBC, 2.6/7; Univision, 1.7/5, ABC, 1.5/4; CW, 0.8/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 16.2 million; Fox, 9.9 million; NBC, 5.5 million; ABC, 4.6 million; Univision, 3.6 million; CW, 2.0 million.
