Al Jazeera taps managing director

Tony Burman to take on English newscast

CANNES The Al Jazeera Network has tapped Tony Burman as the new managing director of its English language newscaster. Burman replaces previous channel topper Nigel Parsons who has moved to a new position as managing director of business acquisition and development.

Mr. Burman will be charged with leading the next phase of Al-Jazeera English’s on-screen and business strategy. The web launched in November 2006 and is now available to more than 110 million households worldwide, but a major U.S. cable deal has so far eluded Al-Jazeera execs.

Burman was previously editor-in-chief and exec director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). While head of CBC’s news and current affairs operations, Burman implemented the integration of the Canadian broadcaster’s radio, TV and online operations.

“The current change is designed to enrich the core of Al Jazeera’s mission – its journalism of depth, its commitment to providing a diversity of viewpoints, its dedication to giving “a voice to the voiceless” and ensuring that the human story is at the center of the news agenda,” commented Al Jazeera Network director general Wadah Khanfar.
