Politician replaces Swarup as minister

HONG KONG — The Indian government Thursday appointed Sushma Singh as the minister of information and broadcasting. She replaces Asha Swarup who was given a regional posting last month.

An Indian administrative service officer from Jharkhand in the North East of the country, Singh was until recently secretary in the ministry for Panchayati Raj. Before that she served as secretary in the ministry for North East affairs.

Singh, who made no comment on her ministerial priorities, is herself set for retirement in May next year.
