SAN FRANCISCO — The gang was all there for Monday night’s benefit performance of “The World of Nick Adams” honoring Paul Newman — Tom Hanks, Casey Affleck, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Danny Glover, Joaquin Phoenix and Sean Penn.
Event, in San Francisco, was hosted by the Painted Turtle, a Northern California camp for chronically ill kids that’s part of a network of camps founded by Paul Newman and A.E. Hotchner. Almost as interesting as the performance was watching the actors in their natural state as they sat onstage waiting their turn to read. Other thesps taking part in the reading were Annette Bening, Billy Crystal, Danny DeVito, Manoel Felciano, Edward James Olmos, Robin Wright Penn, Alison Pill, Bruce Willis and Rita Wilson. The San Francisco Symphony was also part of the performance, and Bonnie Raitt closed out the evening with a song.
