HOLLYWOOD — After Tuesday’s Cinerama Dome preem for “Never Back Down,” which centers on a teen (Sean Faris) trained to fight by a martial arts veteran (Djimon Hounsou), one guest remarked that the movie was like ” ‘The Karate Kid’ meets ‘The Karate Kid.’ “
The line went over well at the Goa after-party with director Jeff Wadlow, who added that “our mentor is not a little old man. Our mentor can kick your ass.”
The film was the first that Summit Entertainment had produced entirely itself since its relaunch. Co-chair Rob Friedman said the pic represents “the broad commercial” movies the company plans to market.
“This film,” Friedman said, “was finished with the perfect release window: spring break.”
