Innovators get technical

Techies talk about upcoming opportunities

HOLLYWOOD — Techies weighed digital challenges and opportunities during Variety‘s 10 Innovators to Watch panel Tuesday at the latest Digital Hollywood confab.

“Everything new is going to have business model problems,” acknowledged Sassoon Film Design prexy Tim Sassoon, who spoke frankly about the challenges of making money from 3-D content without the homevid market.

However, Jenova Chen, creative director and co-founder of thatgamecompany with Kellee Santiago, argued that free online content can pay off in future deals, noting that his company was able to get a rich deal based on an online fanbase.

“Exposure is value,” Chen said.

Daily Variety hosted a poolside reception following the panel at the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel.
