ABC, CBC bring ’18 to Life’ to U.S.

Single-camera comedy follows married teens

ABC has partnered with Canadian broadcaster CBC to bring comedy “18 to Life” across the border to U.S. auds.

Deal was orchestrated by Alchemy Television, which holds U.S. and U.K. distribution rights to the show. “18 to Life” reps the first half-hour primetime comedy simultaneously developed for U.S. and Canadian network auds.

Derek Schreyer (“The Murdoch Mysteries”) and Karen Troubetzkoy (“15/Love”) created and exec produce “18 to Life,” which will be directed by Peter Wellington (“Slings and Arrows”). Montreal’s Galafilm is behind the project.

Single-camera comedy two 18-year-olds who shock their families and friends by getting married.

“Because the kids are 18, their marriage becomes public property — everyone has an opinion — and it gives the show a multigenerational appeal,” said Alchemy series head Burrad Marsh.

Alchemy is also behind the distribution of “Flashpoint,” another U.S./Canadian co-production that has scored strong numbers since bowing earlier this month on both CBS and CTV.

TV’s Canadian invasion includes NBC’s upcoming “The Listener,” which the Peacock will share with CTV. ABC earlier aired “Just for Laughs,” a hidden-camera comedy from up north.

“18 to Life” stars Stacey Farber (“Degrassi: The Next Generation”) and Michael Seater (“Life With Derek”) as the teen couple. Project also stars Peter Keleghan, Al Goulem, Ellen David, Angela Asher, Jesse Rath, Tilo Horn, Tommie-Amber Pirie and Ariel Shiri.
