‘Spiral’ wins French export prize

'Ozie Boo!' nabs animation award

Tough cop drama “Spiral,” pretty much the nearest French TV gets to the hard-edged realism of HBO, took the fiction series export nod at Monday night’s 15th French Film and TV Producers Assn. Awards.

“Spiral,” which has sold to some 30 territories, including the U.K. (BBC), Australia (SBS) and Japan (MICO), is produced by Son et Lumiere and distributed by 2001 Audiovisuel. Since Mipcom, “Spiral” has been sold in Italy, Middle East and Mexico.

Given its no holds barred material, “Spiral” is slotted in late primetime by some broadcasters abroad, said 2001 managing director Laetitia Recayte, who introduced the full second season of “Spiral” to buyers at Mipcom.

“Spiral” beat out costumer “Madame de Pompadour,” produced by Cineteve and sold by France Televisions Distribution, and Calt Distribution’s short format “Camera Cafe,” an access primetime phenomenon in Spain.

The Animation Export Award went to “Ozie Boo! Learn to Live Together,” produced and distributed by Cyber Group Animation, set up in 2005 by former Disney execs Pierre Sissmann and Dominique Bourse.

A star of French animation, the biggest TV toon industry in Europe, “Boo” bested the also nommed “The Fantastic Four,” produced by Moonscoop and sold by Taffy Ent., and “Team Galaxy,” which is sold by Marathon Intl.

Documentary export kudos went to the ZED-produced HD docupic “Jaglavak, Prince of Insects,” about a ferocious army ant.

“Jaglavak” has already aired on nearly 50 channels worldwide including NHK and Discovery HD.

Other docu category contenders were the FTD-sold docu-series “Earth from Above” and special, “Callas Assoluta,” produced by Swan Productions and Arte France and distributed by Europe Images Intl./M5.

Docu producer Zadig Productions took Procirep’s best producer plaudit, Normaal Animation its best young producer nod.
