Spin-off event focuses on 'business of funny'

The broader, commercially focused Just for Laughs will spin off a smaller, two-day biz-oriented confab this year that will take place July 17-18 at Montreal’s Hyatt Regency Hotel. Here are some of the folks who will be headlining this event.

STEVE KOONIN

The Turner Entertainment Networks prexy will deliver the confab’s keynote speech on “the business of funny” the morning of July 17.

IVAN and JASON REITMAN

Also on Thursday the 17th, father and son, right, will discuss comedy filmmaking as it used to be and how it is in “Reitman on Reitman.”

VARIETY’S 10 COMICS TO WATCH

Denizens of our annual emerging talent showcase make the trek north for a party on the 17th.

ROB CLARK

The FremantleMedia senior exec VP of entertainment and production will kick off Friday activities with a keynote focused on the international formatting of comedy.

EDGAR WRIGHT

The Brit filmmaker behind “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” will do his own hourlong sit-down with Jason Reitman on the 18th to talk about the finer points of the comedy feature biz.

KENT NICHOLS and DOUGLAS SARINE

The pair will discuss the creation of their online comedy phenomenon “Ask a Ninja.”
