HBO has upped longtime PR exec Quentin Schaffer to exec VP of corporate communications at the pay cabler.

Schaffer will now officially run the communications division at HBO, filling the void left by Richard Plepler, who was promoted to co-prexy last year.

As exec VP, Shaffer is in charge of all public relations at HBO, including media relations, corporate affairs, talent relations and special events. He reports to Plepler.

Schaffer’s oversight has included the campaigns for virtually every hit HBO program over the years, including “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Entourage” plus longforms such as “Band of Brothers” and “Angels in America.”

Exec handles HBO’s high-profile Emmy and Golden Globe award campaigns and also works closely with consumer, trade and business press.

A 27-year vet at HBO, Schaffer first joined the company in August 1980 as a senior publicist. He became VP of consumer and affiliate press information in November 1985 and VP of media relations in April 1987. He has served as senior VP of corporate communications since July 1999.
