ESPN picks Tuesday as movie night

ESPN2 to air full-length sports-related docs

ESPN has designated Tuesday as movie night for its upcoming slate of full-length documentaries.

To be aired on sister network ESPN2, the sports cabler’s lineup is part of the ESPN Films initiative that launched in March with “Black Magic.”

Set to arrive are “Hellfighters” (April 22), about Harlem’s only high school football team; “The Streak” (April 29) chronicles the 451 consecutive wins by the Brandon High School (Tampa, Fla.) wrestling team; “Bud Greenspan: Heart of the Games” (May 6) profiles the man who’s best known for his Olympic profiles; and “The Zen of Bobby V” (May 13), about former Major League baseball manager Bobby Valentine, who’s now managing in Japan.

ESPN Films falls under the network’s Content Development banner.

“Black Magic,” a two-part, four-hour doc about the players and coaches from black colleges from the Civil Rights movement to the present day, was a ratings hit for the net. “Magic” was the most-watched doc ever on ESPN, with 1.54 million viewers tuning in.

“Our spring slate typifies the diversity of subject matter we seek to explore with ESPN Films and delivers on our promise of providing fans with the high quality creative content,” said Joan Lynch, VP of ESPN Content Development.
