Chris Brown lines up dance card

Singer, Burnett, Roth create new series

R&B star Chris Brown is getting into the reality TV biz, partnering with producers Mark Burnett and J.D. Roth to create a new dance competition series.

Burnett and Roth will exec produce via their Mark Burnett Prods. and 3 Ball Prods. shingles and plan to pitch to broadcast and cable outlets next week.

The untitled Brown skein will center on the world of hip-hop and street dance culture, pitting contestants against one another in impromptu dance-offs. Brown will appear in every episode to help determine which B-boy or B-girl moves on to the next round.

Burnett and Roth are developing the show as an hourlong performance series that will have an elimination episode as well. Brown would be at the center, although an as-yet-unnamed host and other judges may also be involved.

Series doesn’t have a title, although “Chris Brown Presents” will likely be included in the name.

“Chris Brown really is a superstar, and someone who lives and breathes music and dance — so his credibility is massive in this arena,” said Burnett, who tapped Brown to open this year’s MTV Movie Awards (where he performed a dance-off with host Mike Myers). “It’s his show; he’s headlining it. He’s the final arbiter on those who win and those who don’t.”

Roth and his 3 Ball Prods. shingle had already been pursuing Brown when Burnett put feelers out about possibly joining forces on the project.

“We wanted to do a show really badly in the hip-hop/R&B world of dance,” said Roth, whose credits also include “The Biggest Loser” and “Beauty and the Geek.” “We went after (Brown) to be involved in the show and made sure it was ‘Chris Brown Presents’ so that he’s really invested in the show.”

Collaboration reps the first time Burnett and 3 Ball have worked together on a project.

Dance on TV is becoming a crowded category, with Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” as well as several more projects in the works at various nets. Burnett and Roth said they felt there was room for a more urban-flavored show.

Brown’s self-titled 2005 release sold more than 3 million copies worldwide; his follow-up, “Exclusive,” has spawned hit singles such as “Kiss Kiss” (featuring T-Pain). The artist has earned two Grammy noms and is also branching out into acting, appearing in the holiday film “This Christmas.”

“Dancing is more than just a way of moving, it’s a different expression of music,” Brown said. “That’s what I want to focus on with this show.”
