Swift’s ‘Fearless’ returns to top

Album jumps 23% on music charts

Taylor Swift is in the process of achieving superstar status this holiday season, as her sophomore album, “Fearless,” returned to the top of the chart with an impressive 23% sales spike, the greatest jump in the top 10.

“Fearless” sold 249,000 copies in the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a sign that her extensive promotional activities have given the teenage country star a leg up against others hoping their discs will be popular stocking stuffers. It opened at No. 1 five weeks ago and has not dipped below No. 4.

Only four debuts — three R&B singers and a rapper — made it into the top 50 this week. Musiq Soulchild’s “On My Radio” (Atlantic) led the way, selling 91,000 to open at No. 11. Common’s “Universal Mind Control” (Geffen) moved 62,000 to start one slot lower. Both men’s last records hit No. 1.

Brandy’s “Human” (Epic) sold 73,000 to warm up at No. 15, and Avant’s self-titled Capitol release boasted sales of 52,000 to debut at No. 26.

The battle of the one-store exclusives continues to be a landslide. AC/DC’s “Black Ice,” sold only at Wal-Mart, rose three slots to No. 8, selling 110,000 to hit a cume of 1.67 million. Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy,” sold exclusively at Best Buy, continues its freefall down the chart, sliding 11 spots to No. 29, selling 47,000 copies and taking its cume to 365,000.

Last week’s top seller, Britney Spears’ “Circus,” sold about 40% of her first week tally, moving 200,000 units and dropping to No. 2. The Spears disc, the “Twilight” soundtrack and Kanye West’s “808s & Heartbreak” were the only three in the top 10 to drop in sales from the week previous.

On the Christmas front, Enya and Faith Hill swapped spots at 13 and 14, with the Irish singer-songwriter’s “And Winter Came” taking the lead by selling 80,000 copies, topping Hill’s “Joy to the World” by 5,000. “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets” sold 64,000 (No. 17) to put the disc’s cume at 235,000.

Early year-end polls and critics’ lists have put a bounce in a few older titles. MGMT’s “Oracular Spectacular” was up 1,200 to 8,000 (No. 156); the “Juno” soundtrack sold 6,000 (No. 176); Fleet Foxes’ full-length debut also moved 6,000 (No. 181); Vampire Weekend’s self-titled debut sold 5,000 (No. 188); and Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago” sparked up 5,000 (No. 198).
