The show, it seems, always goes on.
Actor Daniel Hoevels of Hamburg’s Thalia Theater company almost killed himself last week when he accidentally slit his own throat onstage. But with his neck bandaged, he was back to tread the boards at Vienna’s Burgtheater the following night.
A mixup in the prop department resulted in Hoevels using a real knife rather than a prop to slit his own throat in the final scene of “Mary Stuart.”
Auds applauded the oh-so authentic f/x, but Hoevels (playing the character of Mortimer) needed urgent medical attention as soon as he got offstage and did not appear for the curtain call.
“If the actor had put a little more pressure on the knife or even struck an artery, he would probably have bled to death on the stage,” a doctor told an Austrian newspaper.
Hoevel’s speedy return did not put an end to the drama surrounding the production. Austrian police are still investigating the incident, as rumors swirled of a rival thesp or enemy having switched the knives.
