Plays by young scribes Carly Mensch and Rajiv Joseph are on the 2008 slate for the Second Stage Theater Uptown series.

Annual summer program, from Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theater, aims to showcase new writers through pared-down productions in an Upper West Side venue.

First show, set to begin its run in May, is Mensch’s “Len, Asleep in Vinyl,” about a music producer whose retreat to a cabin in the woods is interrupted by his son and a pop star. Jackson Gay (“The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow”) directs. Mensch, now in her last year in Juilliard’s playwriting program, also wrote “All Hail Hurricane Gordo,” currently playing at the Humana Fest in Louisville, Ky.

Joseph’s play “Animals Out of Paper” is the first project to come to fruition from the Time Warner Commissioning Program at Second Stage, the developmental initiative TW and Second Stage launched last year. Story centers on an origami artist’s relationship with a teenager and his schoolteacher.

Joseph’s credits include “All This Intimacy,” which had a 2006 run at Second Stage Uptown helmed by Giovanna Sardelli, who also directs “Animals.”

“Len” runs May 13-June 22, “Animals” July 15-Aug. 23.
