Let’s hear it for “The Boys.” Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton are rewriting their 2000 soccer-themed musical “The Beautiful Game” under new title “The Boys in the Photograph.”

Revised version will open in Canada in spring 2009 at Winnipeg’s Manitoba Theater Center, which is co-producing it with Mirvish Prods. of Toronto, where the show will next travel, playing the Canon Theater starting in June 2009.

The show, about a soccer team in 1969 Belfast, opened in London in September 2000 and ran for a year but was not picked up for Broadway.

“Andrew and I were very proud of ‘The Beautiful Game,’ ” said Elton, who is directing the project this time around. “But it wound up being a very dark and grim show. Only 15% of the actual material will be changed, but the show will be 50% different in terms of atmosphere and impact.”

Design team and cast will be “100% Canadian,” according to Elton. In addition to lightening the show’s bleak political ending, Elton hopes changing the title will make it resonate more strongly with North American audiences.
